“What are you doing to me, you plague of a girl?” he whispered.
“If I’m a plague, then you should keep your distance, unless you plan on being destroyed.” The weapons still in her grasp, she shoved against his chest.
“No.” His hands dropped to her waist. “Destroy me.”
THIS BOOK WAS PERFECTION. SO MUCH LOVE.
We enter this mesmerizing, enchanting world, which reminded me a lot of Aladdin, and meet our two main characters
I loved the writing and setting right from the beginning. The setting reminded me a lot of Aladdin and I was even listening to the movie scores and broadway soundtrack as I read it because it just set the tone for me. The setting was so beautiful and truly magical. I loved the culture aspect as well. And the fact that there is a glossary at the end of the book was very helpful and brought more the setting and overall tone of it. The writing was easy to read and flowed very nicely. It was very fast paced and I couldn't put it down! Very very addictive!
"You are not weak. You are not indecisive. You are strong. Fierce. Capable beyond measure.”
Lets start with Shazi. I loved her! I thought she was feisty, very strong willed, smart, and she didn't crap from anyone. She's tough and a lot of fun to follow. I loved how she stuck up for herself and pushed to get what she wanted. She didn't let anyone push her around and she is a fighter which I really appreciated. It's always so much fun when our leading lady is awesome and kick ass. I loved her growth through the novel and how she was willing to realize that everything wasn't as it seemed. She went back and forth a lot with her decision but I didn't mind that because it made her more realistic . I know some people found that annoying but I totally understood her. I think it would have been unrealistic if she didn't have those conflicting emotions given her situation.
“Get up, Shahrzad al-Khayzuran. You kneel before no one. Least of all me.”
Ahhh Khalid!!! AKA my new book boyfriend. I absolutely FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM! In the beginning I was kind of nervous with him around and I didn't really trust him from what we knew...but then we get to know him and realize that he is such a broken character and so complex He had so many different layers to him and I just got completely swept away with where his storyline went. At first, he is kind of stand offish, he's tough, cold, and his whole demeanor is pretty stiff. But then he grows a lot throughout the book and as we get to know him, he learn how SWEET and KIND he really is underneath it all! He's so good but he is in such a bad situation! Throughout the book he slowly learns to open up and let Shazi in and its so beautiful to watch. I loved his growth in this one and I can't wait to see where it leads to in the next book!
“It’s a fitting punishment for a monster. to want something so much—to hold it in your arms — and know beyond a doubt you will never deserve it.”
We got to meet some other great side characters like Jalal and Despina!! I loved their cute little romance that we got a taste at and their friendships with Khalid and Shazi were so cute! I loved all their interactions and I loved how important and essential they were to the story. They really brought a lot to the plot and ahhh it was so good!! I especially really loved Shazi and Despina's friendship and how they bonded over those two boys!
“We women are a sad lot, aren't we?"
"What do you mean?"
"Strong enough to take on the world with our bare hands, yet we permit ridiculous boys to make fools of us."
"I am not a fool."
"No, you're not. Not yet.”
The only character who really pissed me off was Tariq. He was so annoying! But in a good way? Like I understand where he is coming from, but stop getting in the way of my ship!!! He just needs to move on! I appreciated his loyalty and concern for Shazi, but let her make her choices. It just got to be to much by the end. Honestly it shows how good of a writer Renee is because I truly felt so annoyed with him when it was all over. His chapters were interesting because we got to see what life was like outside of the palace, but I just wanted to get back to what was happening in the palace. I'm excited though because I think he is going to grow a lot in the next one...at least I hope! I mean I want him to find happiness....just not with Shazi!
Some things exist in our lives for but a brief moment. And we must let them go on to light another sky.
Okay, okay..now what I really really want to talk about is the ROMANCE IN THIS BOOK!!! OMG OMG
“There is no one I would rather see the sunrise with than you.”
THE ROMANCE WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS STORY FOR ME. It was captivating and passionate. Ahhhhh I loved the banter and how they went from being weary of each other to becoming an unstoppable pair. I just can't with these two!!! I was squealing and laughing and crying and just falling in love with them..
My soul sees it's equal in you
*fan self*
I don't want to spoil it for you but just know this is a really really good romance book! Their relationship was my favorite part to read. I loved how she would tell him stories and how she slowly broke down his barrier. Ahhh I ship them so hard!!!
When she wound her fingers in his hair to draw her body against his, he stilled for breath, and she knew, as he knew, that they were lost. Lost forever. In this kiss. This kiss that would change everything.
I'm so excited for The Rose and the Dagger!! I need it right now!! That ending was such a cliffhanger! We can't leave them all like that!! Ugh!!! Im so excited for the next book and to read more of Khalid and Shazi's story!!
b> I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it.
