"You say wicked like it's a good thing."
I had a lot of fun reading this. Danielle Paige did such a brilliant job of twisting the world of Oz we know into something something dark and different. I'm never going to watch the movie the same again!
"Never underestimate a girl from Kansas."
It follows Amy Gumm, the other girl from Kansas, who is sent in a tornado from her trailer park home to Oz. I liked her character and thought she was pretty badass at the end of the book. She goes through this inner struggle of wondering if magic could change her like it did Dorothy.
Nox was pretty swoon worthy. His story arc and how he ended up with the order was intriguing. I think he genuinely cares about Amy, yet is very loyal to the order and how he was raised. Ollie was one of my favorite characters. I'm excited to see more of the monkeys in the next one and how they're going to help Amy.
"Oz—where all your worst nightmares can come true.”
I thought the lion, tin woodman and scarecrow were really cool and creepy bad guys. The scarecrow was probably the most ruthless, with his crazy experiments and underground lab.
"I hate to break it to you. But just because someone has pretty hair and a good skin tone and a crown instead of a pointy hat doesn't mean she's not the baddest bitch this side of emerald city."
Dorothy was psychotic. She was really brutal compared to the one we know. She got more evil as the book went on and we really saw just how much the power has changed her.
Overall, it was a great start to the series and kept me on the edge of my seat. Nothing is as it seems, and I don't know who to trust. The theme of good vs wicked is really interesting and I'm curious to find out how that's going to play into the rest of the series. I'm excited to see more of the wizard in the next book, and find out more of his story. If you like fairytale retellings with a twist I highly recommend this!
"Down is up. Up is down. Good is wicked. Wicked is good. The times are changing. This is what Oz has come to."
