THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!
When everyone knows you're a monster, you needn't waste time doing every monstrous thing.
I absolutely LOVED this book!!! Without a doubt, my favorite from Leigh Bardugo! This is set in the Grisha world, but you don't necessarily need to read the Grisha trilogy. It's set a completely different country. The Grisha trilogy is set a in a county more reminiscent to Russia and this one is set in a country more like Amsterdan/Victorian London/Vegas. In Six of Crows we follow these 6 outcasts/misfits who are on an impossible heist mission- to sneak into an unbreakable prison and get out a scientist who has a created a drug that enhances Grisha ability but the drug is so strong and powerful that it's slowly killing them. Now the fate of the world is in their hands as they have to work together and pull off the impossible.
Six people, but a thousand ways this insane plan could go wrong
THE CHARACTERS WERE BY FAR MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK!! Their dynamics were so much fun to read and now I can see why everyone says that the characters make this book. Yes it's an awesome plot, but it wouldn't be the same without our crew! And a lot of them new each other and have pasts with one another which makes it even more interesting to read and watch it unravel as we go along. They all have these sad and intense back stories that were so much fun to uncover. I loved how they're not heroes. These are criminal kids trying to do something heroic for money and what could be. They're criminals but they still have these dreams of a better future and that could only happen with the outrageous amount of money that's being offered. So they're not heroes, they're a bunch of misfits.
Kaz leaned back. "What's the easiest way to steal a mans wallet?"
"Knife to the throat?" Asked Inej.
"Gun to the back?" Said Jesper.
"Poison in his cup?" Suggested Nina.
"You're all horrible." Said Matthias.
We've got Kaz who is our genius and always manages to know what's going to happen before it happens. He's so badass and I loved learning more about him! His backstory broke my heart and when you find out what happened to him, it's so understandable why he is the way he is. So sad! But I love his development already and I'm so excited for where it's going!
"I'm a business man," he'd told her. "No more, no less."
"You're a thief Kaz."
"Isn't that what I just said?"
Inej is our Wraith. She's crazy cool and can sneak up on anybody. She's fierce, strong, and loyal. I LOVED her relationship with Kaz!!! Ahhh!! I ship it so hard!!
"I will have you without armor, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all."
Love it!!
"The heart is an arrow. It demands to land true."
So many good quotes though!
Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favorite flower, your favored song, your favorite sweet. And even if he's too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart.
Our next misfit is Jesper. He's a gambler who can't stay out of the casino and total badass with a gun. He's hilarious and some his lines had me dying. I love his loyalty to Kaz but I do wish we got to know more about his back story! Hopefully in the next book we get more of Jesper and Wylan!
"When we get our money, you can burn kruge to keep you warm."
"I'm going to pay someone to burn my kruge for me."
"Why don't you pay someone else to pay someone to burn your kruge for you? That's what the big players do."
I ship Jesper with Wylan! Wylan is our hostage in the crew. He's along for the ride but he's so cute! Im excited that in the next book were getting his point of view because I want to know more!
"Always hit where the mark isn't looking."
"Who's Mark?" Asked Wylan.
The last members of our crew are Nina and Matthias who were my favorites, next to Kaz and Inej!! I LOVED their past and backstory!
"And what did you Matthias? What did you do to me in your dreams?"
"Everything," he said, as he turned to go. "Everything."
They have this crazy love-hate relationship and it was so much fun to read!
"They fear you as I once feared you," he said. "As you once feared me. We are all someone's monster."
Nina is our sassy Grisha. She's powerful, confident and doesn't take crap from anyone. She's from Ravka which is where the Grisha trilogy takes place and somehow she ends up in this awful situation where she meets Matthias. A Fjerdan taught to hate her kind. I don't want to spoil anything of what happened between them just know, it's good stuff guys! Ahhh!!
I have been made to protect you. Only in death will I be kept from this oath.
*squeals*
But Matthais! Ahh in my mind I pictures Chris Hemsworth and I don't know why but it stuck and he's Chris Hemsworth to me. He's on a path seeking revenge and struggling with all he's been taught. I loved his dynamic in the crew. The reluctance to join these criminals but eventually his character development was so rewarding!
Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward.
"Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I'm going to get Wylan's ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost."
Brekkers lips quirked. "I'll just hire Matthias' ghost to kick your ghosts ass."
"My ghost won't associate with your ghost." Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.
All the interactions were the absolute best. The dialogue was witty, sarcastic and one of the highlights of the story. The characters truly made this book something special for me. The plot was engrossing, the setting captivating and easy to visualize. It's action packed, full of plot twist, and so addicting to read! I couldn't put it down! You get so invested in these characters that putting it down seems impossible. Everything about this book was so on point. And the writing has improved so much since Shadow and Bone it's crazy! Leigh Bardugo has created such an intense and gripping world for us to live in and I can't get enough of it! If you didn't like the Grisha trilogy, still give this one a chance! And if you loved the Grisha trilogy, you've gotta pick this one up!!! Loved it so much! I can't wait for Crooked Kingdoms!! I need it!!!
No mourners. No funerals. Among them, it passed for 'good luck'.
